The gracious white frame Hale House,
which dates from the year 1818, is located on the north side of the Branch and
was the residence of Judge Robert S. Hale. On the south side, Judge Augustus C.

house has changed a little over the years. A.C.’s
youngest son Richard made several improvements in the 1880’s and 90’s including
an addition to the rear of the house, a conservatory, porches and other
“Victorian” flourishes. After the turn of the century the house was used only
as a summer residence. The Bruce L. Crary Foundation

Over the years, the Board of Governors
had refined the process of awarding grants to students by directly involving a
Selection Committee at each of the forty area schools that Crary
serves. The Committee is made up of: Principal or Superintendent, School Board
member, Guidance Counselor, community representative and a former Crary recipient if available. Each school is given an
allocation based on demographics which the Committee distributes among the
qualifying senior applicants. The recommended range for awards is currently
$600 to $1000. Students qualify academically and by nature of financial need.
The award is renewable for each of four years of undergraduate study if the
student remains compliant with the guidelines.
