The Hand-Hale Historic District

Designated in 1979, the District is located on both sides of River Street in the hamlet and features the stately homes and offices of two prominent families in the annals of state and national law.

The gracious white frame Hale House, which dates from the year 1818, is located on the north side of the Branch and was the residence of Judge Robert S. Hale. On the south side, Judge Augustus C. Hand built the brick Greek revival structure in 1849. He was the grandfather of Learned and Augustus N. Hand, eminent justices of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Hand House – Augustus C. Hand graduated from Litchfield School in Connecticut and moved with his wife, Marsha Seeley Northrup, from Shoreham, Vermont, to Elizabethtown in 1831. He was appointed Postmaster and Surrogate of Essex County. He went on to be elected Congressman, then a member of the New York Senate, Justice of the New York Supreme Court and an ex officio member of the Court of Appeals. The Hands raised their five children in the large brick house they built in 1849 next to the Law Office. Their three sons began practice there, starting a five-generation tradition of Hand lawyers and judges. A.C.’s grandsons are the most renowned of that tradition: Augustus Noble Hand (1969-1954) and Learned Hand (1872-1961). Cousins and lifelong friends and colleagues, the two had remarkable parallel careers, attending Harvard and Harvard Law together, practicing in New York and being appointed Justices to the U.S. District Court, Southern District, and their final appointment as Justices of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals 2nd Circuit. Their accomplishments are sufficiently noted elsewhere. They are among the most respected justices in the country.

The Greek Revival style house has changed a little over the years. A.C.’s youngest son Richard made several improvements in the 1880’s and 90’s including an addition to the rear of the house, a conservatory, porches and other “Victorian” flourishes. After the turn of the century the house was used only as a summer residence. The Bruce L. Crary Foundation bought the house from the family in 1979 to use for its offices and to provide meeting space to the community. Many of the original furnishings and family portraits remain in place today.

The Bruce L. Crary Foundation – For 35 years the Bruce L. Crary Foundation has been quietly making a difference in the lives of students in the North Country. To date this small foundation has helped over 5000 people pay for their higher education with grants totaling almost $7,000,000. Bruce L. Crary, who was a resident of Westport, NY, was interested in helping young people from the Adirondack area. When he died in a car accident in 1962, at 42 years of age, most of his estate was left as a legacy to assist with college expenses for “deserving students in need of financial assistance.” The Foundation gained not-for-profit status in 1973 and in 2007 became a Supporting Organization of the Adirondack Community Trust. It provides scholarships through the Crary Education Fund to full-time undergraduate students who are residents of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, and Warren counties.

Over the years, the Board of Governors had refined the process of awarding grants to students by directly involving a Selection Committee at each of the forty area schools that Crary serves. The Committee is made up of: Principal or Superintendent, School Board member, Guidance Counselor, community representative and a former Crary recipient if available. Each school is given an allocation based on demographics which the Committee distributes among the qualifying senior applicants. The recommended range for awards is currently $600 to $1000. Students qualify academically and by nature of financial need. The award is renewable for each of four years of undergraduate study if the student remains compliant with the guidelines.
